Family Literacy Day – Friday, January 27th

Did you know that Family Literacy Day is celebrated every year on January 27th? The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

This year’s theme for Family Literacy Day is Celebrate your Heritage. Canada is a great diverse country full of different cultures. The goal of the theme this year is to have families take time to explore and learn about their heritage and to celebrate what they’ve found and share their culture with others. There’s no better way to learn about your family, than together as a family!

Families are encouraged to visit the ABC Life Literacy Website to access resources and activities that families can engage in together. To help children learn and explore their heritage at home, families can complete this Activity Booklet for some fantastic family activities.

Virtual Activity for Families

On January 26, 2023 from 4:30pm to 5:30pm students and parents can complete a crafting activity with Canadian author and illustrator Barbara Reid. To take part fully in this event, you will need: clay or playdough, a paper plate and a sharp pencil or toothpick. This event is ideal for children in grades 1 to 6. Register here to create alongside Barbara Reid.

Celebrating Family Literacy Day at SMY

In addition to home activities for families to explore, we will mark Family Literacy day at SMY by showcasing our positivity and diversity! Students will partake in various activities in our LLC this week to help support the importance of reading and engaging in literacy-related activities. Families who participate in Family Literacy Day activities are invited to fill in the attached Google Form for their child to be entered into a draw for a book of their choice. The deadline for entries is Thursday, February 2, 2023.

Thank you for supporting Family Literacy Day!
